Book Lovers Day
While no one is really sure of the origins of this day, for it’s shrouded in lots of mystery and rumour, the books themselves and how they came to be are not fiction. Initially, carvings on stone tablets, the book was created to make writings and drawings portable for those who couldn’t carry around heavy stone tablets. Can you imagine if you had to lug those around in your backpack at school? It was made from parchment or vellum, which is calfskin and was bound tightly with a wooden cover. The cover was wrapped in leather more often than not to prevent the wood from getting wet and had straps to hold it shut. Thanks to the dawn of the modern age, however, books became much cheaper thanks to printing capabilities that made it easy to print. The invention of the printing press, the typewriter and the computer all affected the book market – for obvious reasons!
Minimeba fun fact: Icelandic people read more than anyone.
Perhaps it has to do with the weather, or maybe they’re just taught to really love books. Either way, Iceland for the win!
Nowadays, we don’t buy our books from book shops. Instead, buy them online and read them via our fancy phones and tablets, making it even easier to carry around a small library in your pocket or suitcase to enjoy no matter where you find yourself. We are so lucky, aren’t we? Our ancestors must be jealous!
So with all that said or should we say written, don’t be shy, share with us your favourite books. Use #NationalBookLoversDay to post on social media and spread the word.
Minimeba food for thought: Illiteracy is still a huge problem throughout the world.
One in five adults around the world can’t read or write, with the highest rates in South and West Asia and sub-Saharan Africa.
Happy Book Lovers Day
