Jennifer Bricker – YOU CAN DO IT!

Ever go through days where you are feeling frustrated with life — maybe frustrated with yourself? Even a bit blue?

We all have days like this, and sometimes it helps if we put our problems into a little perspective. You are fully allowed to feel like this. However, we must try not to make it a habit! We must try to be positive.

Let us tell you about an exceptional young woman; maybe she will be some inspiration for you!

Her early years:

Jennifer Bricker’s life didn’t start how most children’s lives do. Due to a genetic birth defect, she was born without legs and given up for adoption by her biological parents. Can you imagine how hard that must have been?

However, this didn’t stop Jennifer from living a normal life. She learnt to walk and run by crawling on her hands. And spent much of her early childhood climbing trees and bouncing on the trampoline, much like everyone else! It was on the trampoline that her passion was soon realised.

Jennifer distinctly remembers as a little girl sitting in front of the TV and watching her Idol – Romanian star Dominique Moceanu – win gold at the Olympics in 1996. Inspired by Dominque, Jennifer (who was also Romanian by birth) would spend hours practising Dominique’s gymnastic moves.

From this love of Dominque and her Olympic accomplishments, Jennifer decided to take up gymnastics and became a champion gymnastic power tumbler by the age of 11. Power tumbling (in case you don’t know) involves performing artistic floor exercises down a runway.  She went on to win many competitions at state level against able-bodied gymnasts and became a successful gymnast in her own right.

What happened then?

She was 16 when she found out a huge bit of news. She longed to know more about her adoption and asked her parents to please tell her more about where she came from. To her surprise, it turned out she had the same last name as her Idol. “Funny!” she thought. But wait there’s more! Jennifer made a jaw-dropping discovery. Yes, you guessed it. Dominique Moceanu was her biological sister! Wow! This only happens in the movies, right? Nope! #TrueStory!

She didn’t know how to go about telling her newfound sister the truth. It took her four years to pluck up the courage to write to her sister and tell her the fantastic news ever since then they have remained friends!

Where is Jennifer Bricker now?

Jennifer has since been performing as an acrobat and aerialist and even performed on tour with Britney Spears. Yes, she did it again!

Jennifer says people she meets are always amazed by what she can do, and they forget that she is any different. She uses a wheelchair to get around but says she feels happiest when she’s performing acrobatic feats or hanging from silk threads.

“Right now I’m living my dream – travelling the world and connecting with people from all walks of life,” she says.

Her latest challenge is learning to dance, something she says she was never able to do. “My real dream would be to perform on a show like Dancing With The Stars,” she concludes.

“We are all born with unique gifts and talents, and I want to show people we can use them to change lives. Finding out my Idol was my long lost sister was just the beginning; my life has been about making the impossible, possible.”

Totally inspiring, huh? So, next time you’re feeling a bit blue, maybe think of Jennifer and remember, you can be anything you want to be with perseverance and grit!
