MANDELA DAY
Mandela Day is Every year on the 18th of July, South Africa (and other countries worldwide) celebrates Mandela Day! The date not only praises Nelson Mandela’s bravery and reign over our country, but it also happens to be the same date as his birthday.
In 2021 we are being called on to contribute to the Each1Feed1 campaign. You can also join a community initiative or maybe even start your own!
As everyone knows, communities worldwide are being severely affected by the spread of Covid-19, which has hit every economy, causing new social and economic challenges, whilst making the old ones even worse.
But, there is hope.
People and groups of people are discovering ways to assist those in need. You can be one of them.
Nelson Mandela saw himself first and foremost as a servant of the people of South Africa, and he always led by example.
The Nelson Mandela Foundation, and the fantastic work they do, stems from Mandela’s passing on the torch of public service to everyone. “It is in your hands to make our world a better one for all,” he said. At UR-Eekah, we couldn’t agree more! Change starts with you and us. Positive change was the gift left to all of us by Nelson Mandela; however, we have to continue his vision for his legend to live on.
In true Madiba spirit and his vision to spread social justice and freedom for all, this is a time for all of us to become a part of a global movement making sure all tummies are full!
Let us make the changes that Madiba would still be making today if he were still with us.
So, UR-Eekahians, we challenge you to be active citizens in your community, individually or as part of one of the millions of groups getting together to start initiatives.
You can deliver food parcels, help to make masks or donate to these efforts.

Here are just a few ideas to help get you started:
Put together stationery packs (pens, stickers, coloured paper, scissors, etc.) for teachers at an under-resourced school. Some shops that sell school uniforms and supplies have boxes available for drop off!
Call on your friends to do a group neighbourhood clean-up armed with plastic gloves and black bags.
You can even help sort donated clothes at U-turn (https://homeless.org.za/) or The Warehouse (www.warehouse.org.za). Be sure to phone ahead so that you can plan with the organisations.
If you live in Cape Town, perhaps volunteer your time at a Haven Night Shelter. www.haven.org.za
Make ‘care kits’ (including a comb, toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, facecloth, etc.) for patients at a nearby government hospital.
For future builders, you can even help build a home with Habitat for Humanity. How exciting! www.habitat.org
Donate and educational materials you no longer use to Breadline Africa. www.breadlineafrica.org
Call up all your friends and collect teddy bears or books to donate to your local children’s home.
We think every day should be Mandela Day! Small acts of kindness go a long way. As they say, actions speak louder than words.
