Video Game Day

Guys, it’s 8 July! This means it’s time to power on that Playstation or Xbox, even dust off that old Sega or Nintendo 8-bit if you are lucky enough to have one. No one can moan at you for too much screen time on Video Game Day! You’re welcome!

Video games have exploded in popularity over the last few decades. They’re exciting, lots of fun and most importantly, not just for kids anymore. Did you know the most popular video game ever involved simple table tennis? It was called Tennis for two. (no points for creativity there)

Here’s what it looked like:

In 1962, Stephen Russell dazzled the world with Spacewar. It is said to be the most important video game ever created, albeit very simple. We must admit, it’s pretty impressive for 1962. This is what it looked like: https://youtu.be/eePWlLKm_Bg

In 1972, the world was introduced to Pong:

Today, there are over five million games in existence. From high-speed racing adventures to perilous virtual duelling matches, there’s a genre for everyone to enjoy. Yay!

Video games have become so popular that it’s estimated that 64% of adults and 70% under-eighteens in the USA play video games regularly.

In 2020 2.6 billion people played video games. Keep in mind that there are only approximately 7.7 billion people on earth! Woah!

Did you know the first playable human female character was introduced to Japan in 1985? Her name was Typhoon Gal by Taito. 6 years later, Street Fighter II introduced Chin-Li to the world! Back then, it was revolutionary to have a female character. Thank goodness we have loads to choose from now.

So, before starting your favourite console, take a moment to appreciate the graphics. They don’t make them like Tennis for Two anymore! Haha
