Will You Become South Africa’s Next Elon Musk?

If you were the parents of Elon Musk would you have guessed that he would become the man he is today? If you were him would you have known?

What has Elon Musk done that has made him who he is today?

Born in Pretoria, on June 28th, 1971, to a mother from Canada and his father from South Africa everything started out great but by the time he was 9 years old, his parents were divorced.  For a while, he bounced between his dad and mom ended up living with his dad most of the time which he regretted.

Elon shared in an interview with Rolling Stone Magazine that he was severely bullied throughout his entire childhood such an extent that he had to be hospitalised when a group of boys threw him down a flight of stairs.

Many people would have given up on doing anything to change their circumstances given what he’d been through. It is reasonable to ask the question then, what did he do that changed the course of his life?

Elon read a lot when he was young and by the time he was 10,  he was already learning about computers with a Magnavox Odyssey, the first home video game console and the Commodore VIC-20. Mr Musk told Venturebeat that he read the Commodore VIC-20 manual for several days in the evenings so he could learn how it worked.

The next phase

When he turned 18, he moved to Canada because he knew it would be easier to get into the United States from there. He received his Bachelor of Science in Economics from the Wharton School. He also has a Bachelor of Art in Physics from the College of Arts and Sciences.

Today he is co-founder and leads Tesla, SpaceX, Neuralink and The Boring Company. What many people don’t know about this kiff South African is that he also co-founded and sold PayPal, the world’s leading internet payment system. He and his brother also developed and designed an application called Zip2, one of the first internet maps and directions services.

From Elon Musk’s example,  when you have difficulties if you get up, dust yourself off and keep going you will certainly move forward and succeed. Remember to have a thirst for learning and get all the education you need and the world of opportunity will open up to you.

This is the first in blog posts about Who’s in the News in South Africa.  We hope you’ll come back as we highlight our amazing Saffers.
